From the technical specification of the automatic coupler (1969)The coupler has to catch if the horizontal difference is 220 mm (later reduced to 190 mm) and the vertical difference is 140 mm (later reduced to 120 mm)Coupling with the Russian SA3 coupler must be guaranteed The cinematic and strength of the coupler has to guarantee coupling within the range between 1,5 and 15 km/h (later reduced). It must be possible to disconnect the couplers even if under strain. The line connector must include two air lines and 2x5 electrical contacts (later to one air line reduced) The tensile strength must be 1500 kN and the compressive strength must be 2000 kN The function of the coupler is to guarantee in the range between -40°C and +70°C. (Line connector with ice) Other specifications are regarding the function together with side buffers (necessary during a transitional period), the behavior in the train, the operational device etc.
